2012–2017 Origins
Rafal Modrzewski came to Finland on an Erasmus exchange and never left. At Aalto University he met Pekka Laurila, and together they began building what the industry said couldn’t be built: a SAR satellite under 100 kg. Early funding from EU Horizon 2020, True Ventures, and Draper Nexus carried the team from prototype to flight hardware.
2018 First to orbit
On 12 January 2018, ICEYE-X1 - the world's first sub-100 kg SAR satellite and Finland's first commercial satellite - reached orbit. ICEYE-X2 was in orbit before year end.
2019–2021 Building the constellation
ICEYE scaled from proof of concept to the world's largest SAR satellite constellation. Commercial Spot imaging launched and the company entered flood and wildfire monitoring, serving governments and insurers.
2022 Ukraine
ICEYE began supporting Ukraine with SAR satellite capabilities. It was the company's first major defence partnership.
2022–2023 From data to decisions
ICEYE introduced Dwell, a first in market imaging capability, and began delivering 50 cm Spot Fine imagery from Generation 3 satellites. The next generation of satellites made clear ICEYE's capabilities: sovereign intelligence from space.
2024 The sovereign era begins
ICEYE unlocked 25 cm resolution imaging and signed landmark contracts with the European Space Agency and the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, the first in a wave of sovereign space programmes.
2025 Scale
Generation 4 satellites arrived at 16 cm resolution. Production reached one satellite per week. The ISR Cell brought space-based intelligence to the tactical edge for the first time.
By year end, seven European nations had procured sovereign ICEYE systems, making ICEYE the world leader in sovereign intelligence from space.
A joint venture with Rheinmetall was anchored by a €1.7 billion Bundeswehr contract, the largest sovereign space reconnaissance contract in European history. ICEYE became a data provider to NATO's Situation Centre and Allied Command Operations.
2026 Record delivery speed, EUR 1B raised
ICEYE handed over Poland's MikroSAR satellite system to the Polish Armed Forces less than a year after contract signing, one of the fastest sovereign satellite deployments ever completed. A EUR 1 billion Series F round, led by General Atlantic, valued the company at over EUR 10 billion, with production scaling to 100 satellites per year by end 2027 and beyond. ICEYE also opened new entities in Germany and Portugal deepening an already substantial and deeply rooted European footprint that includes significant operations in Finland, Poland, Spain and Greece.
