By combining ship detection from satellite imaging with pattern intelligence, it is possible to determine if a ship is performing activities related to illegal fishing. For example, a ship is detected with its Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder turned off, moving in a trawling pattern, or off-loading to other vessels on the sea are indicators of fishy business.
For effective satellite imaging focused on solving this issue, a high revisit rate and imaging through clouds and darkness are required to make sure that known satellite imaging times aren’t abused for avoidance.
